A snatch block or pulley block is a simple but robust device. Snatch blocks or pulley blocks consist of a solid pulley or sheave generally cast iron or milled aluminium mounted on an axel encased in a frame. The sheave is grooved to accept a particular size of rope be it wire rope, winch cable, nylon rope or synthetic dynamic rope. Depending on the pulley block or snatch block the rope will either be fed through the body of the pulley block and over the sheave or in the case of a snatch block the body will actually open by removing a pin to allow the block “snatch” the rope over the sheave. Snatch blocks or pulley blocks can have several sheaves to allow them to accept more than one pass of rope. The top of the pulley block or snatch block will generally have some kind of swivel hook with a safety catch or a bow shackle which is used to attach the snatch block to its anchor point or to other rigging supplies like a chain sling, nylon sling, polyester web sling or wire rope sling.
